What Democrats Believe
by Mike Smith, Democratic Club President
We all hear this lie repeated so often that many believe it to be true. They say that Democrats are liberals and liberals have no core moral beliefs, therefore, Democrats have no core moral beliefs. We should all take exception to this. We hold many core moral belief, not because we are Democrats but, rather, we are Democrats because we hold these beliefs.
We believe that war is an exercise of last resort, not first option.
We believe that when we do send our soldiers into battle, we owe them a debt of gratitude and respect, certain financial advantages, and a wellness of mind and body.
We believe that good, comprehensive, affordable health care is not a luxury reserved for the fortunate, but rather a necessity for all.
We believe that a woman’s health care decisions, with our without counsel of her choice, are her decisions alone, with no room for politicians.
We believe that the promised made to the elderly in the form of Social Security, Medicare and pensions must be kept.
We believe that a solid, fair, public education for all our children is the wisest investment in our future and not an appropriate source for profit.
We believe that a strong, vibrant working class is not a liability to this country, but rather an under-appreciated asset that should be encouraged.
We believe that we are stewards of the earth and are obligated to pass on its beauty and bounty to those behind us.
We believe that our unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is not qualified by race, color, creed or sexual orientation.
We believe that a government of the people, by the people and for the people should not be sold to the highest bidder.
We believe in that great document, the U.S. Constitution and all 27 of its amendments including the four that say that a person’s right to vote shall not be abridged.
We are strong, we are united, we are proud. We are Democrats.
